Overview

Adrian Crenshaw's DEF CON 22 talk gives an overview of Tor and I2P, then goes through real cases where darknet users were caught. These include Silk Road and its operator.

On Hacker News

HN points to it to show that most Tor busts came from poor operational security by the user rather than a flaw in Tor itself.

Most cases are closed on circumstantial evidence. Weird to see the same podcast that hosts freeross information as also hosting bitcoin podcasts. Adrian Crenshaw the security researcher has a good defcon talk on how ross went down for SR. Don't post your tech problems for an illegal service on stackoverflow! [VIDEO]

In case anyone feels like doing something like that, this talk is worth a listen: [VIDEO] A talk on how Tor users got caught. In a nutshell: it wasn't Tor's fault, but bad OPSEC on the part of the users.
